Categories of bats that use buildings

Generally, bats that use buildings can be divided into 4 categories:

  • Crevice-dwelling bats (which tend to be hidden from view): common pipistrelle, soprano pipistrelle, Nathusius' pipistrelle, Brandt's and whiskered bat
  • Roof-void dwelling bats (that may be visible on roof timbers): noctule bat, serotine bat, Leisler's bat, Daubenton's bat, greater mouse-eared bat and barbastelle bat
  • Bats that need flight space in certain types of roost: natterer's bat, and brown and grey long-eared bat
  • Bats that need flight space and flying access: greater horseshoe bat and lesser horseshoe bat
